Educational Technologies that Promote Active eLearning

Welcome back from the holidays. We hope you had a chance to relax with family and friends. It’s the start of a new term and a new year and with it the chance to think about what lies ahead. Maybe you were thinking about strategies to increase student engagement in your classroom or online course? As always, at eLTI , we are here to help you.

eLTI would like to know how you create your content in Blackboard and how we can improve our services for Blackboard support, training and usage. Please take a few minutes to answer this survey (it’s only 10 questions!). Thanks for your time and we are eager for your inputs….more to come in the coming weeks.

There are many educational technologies that can make your curriculum more interactive. Try adding animated elements to your course or add voice-over narration to your slides and pictures. These strategies can be helpful in any type of classroom but are especially useful in a “flipped” classroom or fully online course. They help build student engagement and enhance student motivation.

The following are the three popular educational technologies that eLTI uses. You can enlist our developers (Chilli, Evelyn or Amineh) to create custom multimedia objects for your classroom! Please contact us for project initiation.

- Articulate 360 is the top PC-based eLearning authoring software on the market. It has lots of built-in features to create accessible activities that enhance engagement.

- GoAnimate is web-based software available through subscription. It lets you create fun and lively animated videos quickly and easily. You can use it to bring case studies to life with animated scenarios or demonstrate a complicated process or theory through narrated animation.

- Camtasia is available for the PC and Mac. It lets you create screen captures and voice-overs. It is incredibly versatile and easy to use. Faculty have used it to demonstrate software, how to navigate a library database, how to work through math problems, and how to edit documents.

For PC users only, you have an option to create your own simple learning objects within PowerPoint using Office Mix. Our staff can assist you in learning to use this free tool to develop content that is engaging and accessible for all students.

- Office Mix is a free add-on to MS Office. It plugs into your existing PowerPoint menu and gives you the ability to create narrations and annotations over your slides. It’s incredibly easy to use. You can use it to enhance parts of an online lecture or turn your PowerPoint presentation into a full video.
